Helpful Tips for Using GECO PTFE Tape

PTFE tape forms a tight-fitting seal around the threads of various connection types. It also lubricates the threads in order to act as a deformable filler and preventing leaks if the tape is dense and thick enough. This lubricating effect is caused by the extremely low surface friction of PTFE.

Here are some helpful tips for using PTFE Tape:

1) Preparing the thread:
Dirt, rust, grease, or other pipe sealants will very certainly be found on existing pipes. So, clean the threads thoroughly with brush or clothes to remove the dirt or dust. Allow the cleaned joint threads to dry completely before proceeding with any additional work. This will make it easier to insert the pipe into the connection fitting.

2) Wrapping the thread:
After the fittings are completely dry, start to wrap the GECO PTFE sealant tape around the thread in a clockwise direction. Wrap at least half the width of the tape around the fitting each time. If you wrap the tape in the opposite direction, it will crumble and leave the fitting worthless. This is important in order to avoid harmful distortions.

3) No. of wrapping turns:
Three rotations around the pipe’s edge are the recommended number of turns for the tape. Wrap until you’ve reached the end of the thread. Although some material distortion between threads can help in the creation of a tighter seal.

4) Minimize leakage:
Wrap the tape firmly enough to keep the threads visible as distinct ridges, even if the tape is thicker or opaquer. Manually push the tape against the roots’ bottoms, then put the male thread into the female thread and tighten them manually or with a special tool to avoid leakage.

5) Coupling joints:
Insert the pipe into the connection fitting. To do this, twist the pipe while applying pressure to both pipes. The pipe will make its way into the fitting as you twist it. Finish the last wrap by cutting and attaching the last length of loose tape, making sure that none is left incorrectly attached, and then cut off the end smoothly and flawless.
